2010 Toyota CamryLinda writes: Hi Mike, My nephew has a machine or whatever you call it that can tell what the codes are when the different lights come on.  I looked up the code and it showed the coolant sensor. My husband replaced the sensor on my Camry. We bought the part from Toyota. The light came on again. What do we check for next? It is okay to drive?

Mike: Linda, thanks for the e mail. This is the problem with places selling code readers and auto parts stores telling customers to read the codes and replace the sensor that shows a problem. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Well meaning consumers often end up spending more time and money than they would if they took it in to a professional technician. I’m sorry you have this issue.

The code reader you are using is telling you that there is a problem in the data transmitted to the computer by the Coolant Temperature Sensor. It is usually a problem that the engine is staying too cold too long for optimum emissions. This could be caused by several components in the cooling system. Perhaps the thermostat is staying open? Perhaps there is corrosion on the terminals? There could also be a case where the PCM (main computer) needs to be re-flashed to establish new parameters. A factory trained technician needs to look at the data stream determine what is going on. If you drive it, and the code comes back, it could damage your catalytic converters and cost you big money. Taking it in could save you bug bucks in the long run.
